KSP Season 15 Episode 3 raises the title "Why Engineers Should Practice Public Speaking". This event was held onsite at ISTTS on November 2, 2022, and was hosted by Dr. Jenny Ngo who is one of the English Conversation Class (ECC) lecturers at ISTTS.
As opening, Dr. Jenny Ngo, or who is usually known as Bu Jenny, describes the stereotypes of most people when they hear the word "engineer". According to him, one of the stereotypes is that engineers prefer to work alone rather than in groups or teams. This is what makes most engineers have less public speaking skills.
According to Mrs. Jenny, there are several simple ways that can indirectly hone our public speaking skills, one of which is talking to friends. This is often taken for granted, but in fact it can have a big impact on us. By talking or chatting with friends, we will usually feel more confident about doing public speaking.
If we are afraid to do public speaking (Glassophobia), the way we can reduce this fear is to enter the room, lock the door, then stand in front of the mirror and try to do a question and answer session to ourselves and record it so we can provide feedback later. . However, if you feel unable, don't force yourself because anything that is forced is definitely not good. Conversely, if we are not embarrassed, we can make small presentations to those closest to us and ask them to provide feedback on the presentation earlier.
Why is public speaking necessary? Because at work later, apart from being smart, we also need to be able to negotiate. Mrs. Jenny said that companies prefer to hire candidates who have these 2 skills compared to those who are smart but lack the ability to negotiate.
In between materials, Mrs. Jenny also did not forget to invite several students to try practicing public speaking by introducing themselves in front of the class. Those who try to move forward get prizes and also very useful feedback from him so that later it can be a provision for them in the future.
The essence of his presentation at KSP season 15 episode 3 is that public speaking is very crucial in our lives. By having good public speaking skills, we can get many benefits, some of which are going abroad for free and it's easier to get a job. Therefore, let's start learning public speaking from now on!
