The Exciting Social Media (SMS) Workshop which was held on April 5 2024 at the Surabaya Integrated Science and Technology Institute (ISTTS) became a highlight for SMAK Santa Maria Surabaya students and related parties. This event was organized by ISTTS with speaker Ardalina.L.C.G.,S.Ds., M.I.Kom., who also serves as Head of the ISTTS Digital Marketing Team, as the main speaker.
The ISTTS campus gave a warm welcome as seen from the pickup of students from SMAK Santa Maria to ISTTS at 07.30 WIB. The event officially opened at around 08.00 WIB with a warm welcome from Dr. Ir. F.X. Ferdinandus, M.T., who explained the importance of public speaking skills in this digital era. This brief presentation provides a strong foundation for the development of skills that will be discussed during the workshop.
The first session of the workshop was attended by Ardalina as the main presenter, who has an educational background and extensive experience in the field of social media. For two hours, Ardalina presented material about the concept of social media, underlining the importance of creative content, and outlining effective strategies in attracting the attention of social media users. This diversity of material ensures that participants gain insights that are a complete and in-depth explanation of the world of social media today.
Ardalina discusses in depth how to create content and edit videos for the Instagram and TikTok platforms. Participants are invited to understand the basic techniques in creating interesting content, including the use of special effects and selecting music that is suitable for content.
One of the most anticipated moments is the division of groups to complete a challenge in the form of a project. ISTTS certainly provides this opportunity with the aim of being able to apply the knowledge they have gained in this workshop. In this project, participants were divided into five groups, where each group consisted of 4 students. Each group was given the challenge to create a campus promotional video that was as unique and interesting as possible. To achieve this goal, each group toured five locations on campus such as Building E, Building B, Park, Building L and Student Lounge which are new facilities for students, then continued by collecting ideas, recording material, and not forgetting to edit it into one content. which is compact and certainly attractive.
The extraordinary creativity of the participants deserves a thumbs up and can be used as an example for others in exploring the potential in social media. They have complete freedom to be creative, with the only note that it does not contain elements of SARA. Using a cellphone camera and simple editing software, they succeeded in creating very interesting works. The duration of the video is around 90 seconds, chosen because it is in line with the current trend of social media users who prefer concise content or straight to the point.
After the video creation process is complete, the next step is to upload it to the Instagram platform. This is the time for participants to use their newly acquired knowledge to elicit a response from the public. The assessment criteria used are quite simple, namely by calculating the highest number of likes obtained, so this can provide an opportunity for each participant to directly experience the response from their audience.
The response received was very encouraging. Participants looked very enthusiastic and positive throughout the event. They seemed very involved in every stage, from understanding the concept to content creation and final assessment. This enthusiasm is not just momentary euphoria, but reflects the deep interest in social media and content creation among today's young generation.
The success of the "Seru Social Media SMS" workshop can be measured by the high level of participation and involvement of the participants. They not only receive information passively, but are also active in applying it into a form of real work. This is in line with the aim of the workshop, namely to provide participants with more than just theory and new skills in managing social media and being able to create creative content, but also practical skills that can be applied in everyday life.
