KSP Season 13 Episode 5: HEROES ARE NOT BORN BUT MADE

"Youth is a pillar of civilization going forward..." is a sentence uttered by Mr. Sigit Firdaus Prayogi, S.T., M.Ds., one of the lecturers of the ISTTS Product Design study program in the Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP) webinar entitled "Heroes are not Born but Made". The webinar, which was held on May 11, took place online via the Zoom platform and YouTube live streaming.

At the beginning of the seminar, Mr. Sigit explained about the important role of youth and heroes. According to him, heroes and youth have a very strong correlation. Pak Sigit explained that the youth were chosen because they had confidence in their future, besides that they were also considered to have strong physical and mental strength.

However, what about the reality?

In today's era, being a “hero” turns out to be an expensive thing, this can be seen from the many young people who become indifferent to one another. In addition, many young people now have a weak mentality when faced with trivial problems. Pak Sigit said that this could be a crisis of heroic values ​​because it will greatly affect the future of the nation. From here he summarizes the essence of the hero into several points, namely inspiration, struggle, self-sacrifice, exemplary, self-respect, sincerity, strength and persistence.

Heroes are not born but are made of one's own desires. But before we become heroes we need to reflect on ourselves first. How to? Pak Sigit gave several important points to become a 'hero'. The first is that youth must finish with himself, meaning that there is already mental maturity in him. One form of mental maturity is to have good emotional control and no longer think about self-interest. The second point is youth who contribute, youth who have empathy and are ready to help solve other people's problems. This can be started from the closest people first, one example is what contribution students will make after graduating from college. The third is a young man who knows the way. Pak Sigit explained that the young people who know this direction mean those who have a clear purpose in life.

The explanation then continued on the history of youth and civilization. Pak Sigit divides 3 eras, namely the Industrial era (1760-1850), the marketing era (1950-2000) and the design era (2000-present). Mr. Sigit explained how fast technology and design developments are in the current era. The current design era is very demanding of young people to develop creativity and ideas because consumers are now smart in choosing products, not only based on functionality but also design form. One of the technological developments that is starting to spread its wings in various sectors is 3D Printing. Pak Sigit shows a glimpse of a video about research from a laboratory that is trying to produce a body part through 3D printing. 3D printing is now starting to touch the medical world where organs can be produced and transplanted into the human body.
