Microsoft Word is a program that is very familiar to various people in the community to write something easily and concisely on a computer. Through Microsoft Word, you can do formatting for many things, such as making lists and inserting pictures. In fact, Microsoft Word or commonly referred to as Ms Word was created with the aim of making a document efficiently. But in fact, even though they are very familiar with this program, there are still many people who don't know the unique tricks and functions that are in Ms Word.
Through the Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP) webinar held by ISTTS in season 9 of the 2nd episode, participants were given tutorials on how to make automatic formats for certain chapters and automatic table of contents without having to look one page at a time in Word. The seminar which was held on Friday, April 16, 2021 with the theme "Trivial Things in Microsoft Word that You Must Know" was presented by one of the lecturers of Informatics, Eka Rahayu Setyaningsih, S.Kom, M.Kom. and attended by internal and external ISTTS participants.
Unlike most webinars that present material using slides, this time Ibu Eka immediately practiced an example of how to create an automatic table of contents. Starting from showing how to make the appearance of a text in general, such as creating chapter titles, sub-chapters, text, and providing numbering according to a predetermined format manually which is most often made by students. This of course will take a lot of time and tends to make the format inconsistent. We can adjust the text styling according to the format required in the Modify section so that each specified chapter and sub-chapter title will change automatically when clicking the styling section. We can create new styling or create from existing styles in Ms Word. To adjust the numbering, Styling of headings can also be used. Meanwhile, page numbering can be adjusted via the Layout menu and Page breaks.
Bu Eka then showed how to create an automatic table of contents through the menu References> Table of contents. Here we can create a table of contents automatically without the need to see one by one the pages that will be placed in the table of contents. If there is added text, just click Update Field. Bu Eka also gave a trick to separate 1 document file into several documents by simply using the View> Outline menu. He suggested to simply use the existing styling in Ms Word to make it easier if you want to create a table of contents without having to adjust the Modify section again. If you want to make the numbering for each chapter or sub-chapter automatically, then we can set the number placement in the Paragraph sub menu. In addition, the chapter numbering that has been made is also useful for providing numbering and annotation on images on the Refrences> Insert Caption menu. We can create and set captions on images and automatic numbering of images in the document so that users don't have to manually write captions one by one on each image. Apart from adjusting text and images, Ms Word also has a unique trick in arranging tables. For example, to add numbers in a table, formulas that are already available can be used without having to calculate through a calculator or Microsoft Excel. Bu Eka also explained a little about several other features such as the text translation feature and the Control Options feature
The webinar then ended with a question and answer session between the participants and the speaker about the Microsoft Word feature, followed by filling out the attendance form and taking a group photo.
