KSP Season 15 in Episode 2 with the title “Attractive and Unique Packaging Design Tips” was held on November 2, 2022 and presented by Mr. Yohanes Firananta Setyo, S.T., M.M. He is one of the lecturers in the S1 Product Design department of ISTTS. This seminar was held onsite at ISTTS which took place at 13.00 WIB.
At this seminar, Mr. Yohanes explained that the packaging is not only to maintain and protect the contents of a product, but the packaging must also be able to tell stories and be able to convey emotions. The function of packaging today must be a means of communication with consumers, assisting the distribution of products from producers to consumers, and triggering interest in purchasing products. Furthermore, Pak Yohanes also explained how to choose packaging materials. What are the factors? First, what are the packaged products in what form? Is it powder, liquid, or solid? Second, is the product heavy? Fragile? Rough? And what is the size of the product? Third, is the product perishable and smells bad?
Mr. Yohanes also shared tips on how to make attractive and unique packaging, including using bright colors that are different from other brands. Bright colors are one of the right choices because they seem striking and different when placed together with other products in the shop window. In addition, Mr. Yohanes also explained that in making the packaging of a product, there are many things that must be considered, one of which is ergonomics (the study of the interaction between humans and products that make it easier for users) in holding, carrying, using, and opening the packaging.
Next, Mr. Yohanes explained the material on packaging classification based on the stiffness properties of packaging materials. First, flexible packaging which has the characteristics of being flexible, easy to bend, and not easily damaged. Second, rigid packaging which has the characteristics of being hard, not flexible, and easily broken. Third, semi-rigid packaging that has rigid characteristics but can still be pressed or bent at a reasonable level. Mr. Yohanes also introduced the types of plastic materials and paper materials. Plastic packaging materials are divided into several types with certain symbols starting from those that are only disposable to toxic and should not be used. For paper packaging materials, there are several requirements that must be met in order to be declared safe as food packaging, including not using paper bleach, not having ink on the inside, and being certified food grade. Before the event ended, there was a group photo session as the closing of the event.
