ISTTS Industrial Engineering Student Association for the period 2021/2022 held its inaugural webinar with the theme Espirit de Heros or the Spirit of the Hero, in order to welcome and commemorate Heroes' Day on November 10, 2021. The material session was presented by Mrs. Ellen Selyna Ardinata, ST, a lecturer from the Study Program Industrial Engineering at ISTTS. This webinar is hosted through the ZOOM platform.
A series of events in the webinar opened with a quiz competition session where each participant will answer multiple choice questions via a google form. The questions given in this competition were about guessing the names of the fighters on November 10 and some other interesting facts about Heroes.
Next, the participants listened to the material session presented by Mrs. Ellen. The introduction to the material begins with Mrs. Ellen who asks the participants, "What is it and why is the spirit of a hero? Who is the hero in your life?".
Mrs. Ellen explained that the heroic spirit for millennials that should be adopted from past warriors is a sense of enthusiasm to never give up and always want to try and get up when faced with a barrage of problems. She added, the hero figure does not always use weapons to attack the enemy in front, but it is enough to become a hero over oneself first, or in other words, the importance of mastery and self-control.
In her presentation, Mrs. Ellen said that Indonesia has 3 important issues that hinder the country and its human resources, especially Generation Z, from developing faster and being able to compete fairly. The 3 issues in question are: lack of digital literacy, sustainability of natural resources, and education and financial literacy.
- Lack of Digital Literacy
Mrs. Ellen explained that it is still easy for Indonesians to be provoked and carried away by hoax news, clickbait, or taking care of other people's lives that have no benefit for themselves.
She added that influencers who are scattered in cyberspace should be able to use their privileges to spread positive impact and use their media of influence to invite their followers to do positive things.
Unfortunately, there are also influencers who use their influence for personal gain. For example, fights between influencers are planned for the sake of content by seeking "stage" and attention from the community, thereby leading to public attention to share unimportant news with each other and potentially causing cyber bullying due to the division of support camps between these influencers. As a result, the influencer's profile increased rapidly in terms of followers and profile retention rates. - Natural Resources Sustainability & Environmental Issues
Mrs. Ellen continued to the second issue by discussing the root cause of the problem that should be easy to solve, but difficult to discipline. He emphasized that the source of this problem was due to a lack of awareness and lack of action as well as a lack of habit formation to do small things, but have a big impact, such as not leaving the TV and lights on while sleeping, not using a private vehicle to get to the destination if the distance is very short, and littering.
Mrs. Ellen also gave references to natural issues from abroad, namely the energy crisis experienced by China today. "If Indonesia experiences an energy crisis in the near future, it is outrageous," she said.
Furthermore, Mrs. Ellen gave a concrete example of the lack of real community action, but the high number of voices on the issue of the climate crisis, namely the use of social media in which netizens only voiced their voices to support the environment, but there was no real action. At the end, the second issue is closed with the sentence “Think global, act local”. -
Financial Education and Literacy
The third issue was opened by Mrs. Ellen by saying that social inequality in developed countries is difficult to overcome, especially in developing countries such as Indonesia with the 4th largest population in the world.
The high level of social inequality in society also has an impact on the education sector. "Many schools may be free of charge, but the supporting facilities for students to attend school are difficult to cover evenly," said Mrs. Ellen. An example of the lack of supporting facilities, such as there are still children who cannot go to school because they have to help their parents work to meet the needs of family life, not just pay school fees. Then, there are also children who already have the intention to go to school and their parents are quite able to send them to school, but access to transportation and roads to school is still minimal.
The high level of social inequality coupled with the lack of quality educational opportunities, increasingly encourages the millennial generation to be vulnerable to the influence of an extravagant lifestyle. "It's not only those who don't get a quality education, those who get it are no less extravagant in fulfilling their lifestyle in order to get recognition in cyberspace", explained Mrs. Ellen.
Influencers who want to share free knowledge about financial literacy are an example of the spirit of a hero. "These influencers can actually make money from their main job. But the great thing is, they want to take the time and take the time to create financial literacy educational content, just to remind their followers not to fall into the holes of influencers first," said Mrs. Ellen. unfortunately not many influencers like this are considered and appreciated, or even they can be blasphemed because of differences of opinion and if they lose in playing stocks or other financial instruments because of their content.
The material session closed with a conclusion from Mrs. Ellen, namely "The spirit of a hero is if you can use the privileges you have (in whatever form) to be able to have a positive impact on your society".
Before ending the material session, participants and speakers are welcome to conduct a question and answer session. Finally, the Hero's Day webinar with the theme Espirit de Heroes arrived at the end of the event and the entire series of event sessions ended with a group photo session and attendance.
